Performance Nutritionist
Performance Nutrition Descriptor
Performance Nutrition is the application of nutrition science to support health, training, and performance in athletes and active individuals. Performance Nutritionists use evidence-based tools to assess dietary patterns and identify areas where nutrition can optimise health, recovery, and performance outcomes. This approach allows them to work collaboratively with athletes, coaches, and other professionals to implement tailored strategies that are safe, practical, and aligned with individual needs and goals.
Performance Nutrition is not a replacement for medical care. Practitioners always refer any client presenting with ‘red flag’ signs or symptoms to a medical professional and frequently work alongside doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, and other healthcare providers to ensure joined-up care.
The Performance Nutritionist requests that the Client notes the following:
- The degree of benefit obtainable from performance nutrition support may vary between athletes, even with similar goals or training programmes.
- Nutrition advice will be tailored to support the performance goals and/or health concerns identified and agreed between both parties.
- Performance Nutritionists are not permitted to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
- Nutrition advice is not a substitute for medical advice and/or treatment.
- Your Performance Nutritionist may recommend food supplements and/or functional testing as part of your programme. Where supplements are recommended, products will be chosen with reference to safety, quality assurance, and Informed-Sport certification.
- Standards of professional practice in Performance Nutrition are governed by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) Code of Conduct and, where applicable, the CNHC Code of Conduct.
- This document only covers the practice of Performance Nutrition within this consultation; if any advice falls outside this scope, this will be made clear.
The Client understands and agrees to the following:
- I am responsible for contacting my GP about any health concerns.
- If I am receiving treatment from my GP or other medical professional, I should inform them about any nutrition programme I am following.
- I will inform my Performance Nutritionist of any medical diagnoses, prescribed medication, herbal medicine, or supplements I am taking, as this may affect the advice given.
- If I am unclear about any part of my nutrition programme, I will contact my Performance Nutritionist promptly for clarification.
- I understand that the advice is personal to me and may not be appropriate for others.
- I must contact my Performance Nutritionist if I wish to continue any supplement programme beyond the original agreed period, to avoid potential adverse effects.
- Recording consultations in any format is not permitted without the written consent of both myself and my Performance Nutritionist.
